"Bulletin Board Posts"

The following photographs are of pictures/information/posters found on bulletin boards on secondary school campuses in the Mukono district of Uganda.

Note "fact no. 1" about love: that it "can buy you a beautiful woman and highest bride price..." This is an example of how traditional tribal values concerning marriage are still prominent in Ugandan school settings. More and more girls are enrolled in primary and secondary schools in Uganda--a feat EFA would praise-- but they are still surrounded by messages that they can be "bought".

A bulletin board outside MTA's school library shows a standard poster as part of a nationwide campaign to end cross-generational sex, in part to prevent the further spread of AIDS. A close-up of the poster follows below:

The poster above focuses on female students, encouraging them to take responsibility of their romantic relationships and avoid the temptation of Sugar Daddies. the text at the bottom reads: “Girls! The gifts, the nights out and the cash can never be worth your future. Older men are taking advantage of you and putting you at risk of HIV infection, in exchange for material things. This practice is called cross generational sex. Respect yourselves and say NO to Sugar Daddies.”
Many schools do not have formal sex-education units as part of their academic curriculum. Rather, student clubs such as Straight Talk have the responsibility of educating their peers and create posters such as this one above, which are displayed inside and outside of classrooms.

The following are from a bulletin board in Bishop's S.S. library:

Although topics such as sexual harassment and rape are not often discussed explicitly in school settings, posters condemning such things are rather ubiquitous, as it is not uncommon to find them on bulletin boards in classrooms, libraries, administrative offices, etc.

More campaign posters:
One of the few posters directed at men.
